COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA — Family, friends, coworkers, and members of the Council Bluffs community are mourning the passing of Michael J. Mayer, 47, who died on July 30, 2026, while doing something he deeply loved — riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. His unexpected passing has left a profound sense of loss among those who knew him as a devoted family man, loyal friend, and generous member of the community.

Born on June 6, 1979, Michael lived a life centered around family, friendship, and meaningful connections. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and someone whose greatest joy came from spending time with the people he cared about most.

Michael shared a special bond with his granddaughter, Mia “Mimi” Rose, whom he treasured deeply. His love, encouragement, and support created countless memories that his family will continue to hold close in the years ahead.

Beyond his role as a family man, Michael was known for his enthusiasm for life and his many passions. He had a deep love for Harley-Davidson motorcycles, dirt track racing, fast cars, bowling, and, during his younger years, hunting and fishing. A graduate of Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, he participated in wrestling and football, experiences that helped shape his competitive spirit and lifelong friendships.

Michael was also a passionate supporter of the Dallas Cowboys, Nebraska Cornhuskers football, and dirt track racing. Through his membership with the Defiance Harley-Davidson HOG Chapter, he built lasting friendships with fellow motorcycle enthusiasts who shared his love for the open road.

Throughout his professional career, Michael dedicated himself to serving others. He worked with Genie Pest Control, Cox Communications, Bank of the West/BMO, and most recently served as a Customer Service Representative with United Concordia Dental (UCCI). Colleagues and customers remembered him for his approachable personality, humor, reliability, and willingness to assist others.

Those who knew Michael often described him as someone who never met a stranger. Whether discussing motorcycles, racing, sports, or proudly sharing stories about his family, he had a natural ability to connect with people and make them feel welcomed.

His generosity extended far beyond casual friendships. Michael and his wife, Connie, opened their home and hearts to many children over the years, always ensuring there was space for one more person at their table. His kindness, hospitality, and willingness to help others became a defining part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Michael J. Mayer is lovingly remembered by his wife of more than 20½ years, Connie; his sons, Dominick (Caitlyn Zuber) and Elijah Gilkerson; his beloved granddaughter, Mia “Mimi” Rose; his parents, Vickie Snodgrass (Randy) and Richard Mayer Sr. (Kathy); his brothers, Jason (Laura), Jonathan, and Richard Mayer Jr. (Jessica Fisher); along with extended family members, bonus children, and lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Uncle Mark Morrison, his parents-in-law Carl and Janice Mumma, and his brother-in-law Craig Mumma.
